At University of Vermont Health, we’re committed to delivering exceptional care close to home for communities across Vermont and northern New York. That commitment recently reached a new milestone with the renovation of Vermont’s only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UVM Healths Golisano Children's Hospital — a project that reflects our dedication to patient-centered care and the collaborative spirit that defines our health system.
Transforming Care for Our Smallest Patients
The NICU, which cares for approximately 500 premature and critically ill infants each year, has undergone its first major update since opening in 1988. Thanks to generous community support — including a $1 million gift from EastRise Credit Union — the renovation creates a more private, welcoming environment for families and a more functional space for our clinical teams.
Key improvements include:
Two new private rooms, including a double patient room, offering families privacy during critical moments and supporting overnight stays for parents preparing for discharge.
A brighter, safer entrance and enhanced security features for staff.
A refreshed nurses’ station designed for efficiency and collaboration.
“These private spaces have provided a calmer, more healing environment for our sickest patients and a much-needed private area for families during vulnerable moments,” says Natalie Clark, BSN, RN, NICU nurse manager.
Why This Matters for Providers
As a physician or advanced practice provider at UVM Health, you’ll be part of a system that values innovation and family-centered care. The NICU renovation is just one example of how we invest in state-of-the-art facilities and team-based care models to support both patients and clinicians.
Our providers don’t just work in a hospital — they work in an integrated academic health system that combines cutting-edge medicine with a strong sense of community. With partnerships through the Larner College of Medicine and the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, you’ll have opportunities to teach, conduct research, and shape the future of rural health care.
