UVM Health Names Dr. Stephen Leffler as New CEO

UVM Health has announced the appointment of longtime emergency medicine physician Dr. Stephen Leffler as CEO, reinforcing our commitment to clinician‑driven leadership. Dr. Leffler, who has served in roles ranging from Emergency Department Medical Director to President & COO of UVM Medical Center, steps into the position after serving as interim CEO since October. His extensive clinical and operational background positions him to guide UVM Health through a pivotal time for rural health care.

A central focus of Dr. Leffler’s leadership is restoring operational decision‑making “closer to the point of care.” This direction strengthens our longstanding identity as a physician‑led organization, one where those who care for patients are trusted to shape the strategies that support them. His emphasis on access, affordability, and quality reflects the challenges facing Vermont and northern New York and underscores the importance of clinical insight in health system leadership.

For Physicians and APPs, a provider‑led structure translates into a workplace where clinical expertise truly drives change. This clinician‑centered approach creates a supportive environment where providers feel heard, valued, and empowered to influence meaningful improvements in care delivery.

Under Dr. Leffler’s leadership, we remain dedicated to fostering a culture that elevates the voices of clinicians and strengthens care for the communities we serve. With deep academic ties, opportunities for professional growth, and a mission grounded in collaboration and compassion, UVM Health offers an ideal environment for Physicians and APPs seeking a fulfilling and purpose‑driven career.
