We're proud to celebrate The University of Vermont Medical Center's recognition from Practice Greenhealth's 2026 Environmental Excellence Awards, one of the nation's most prominent authorities on healthcare sustainability. The award recognizes organizations that are reducing their environmental footprint while improving operational efficiency, resilience, and community health. In 2026, more than 700 healthcare facilities across the United States and Canada participated in the awards program, highlighting the growing impact of sustainability across the healthcare sector. The University of Vermont Medical Center was named among the nation's Top 25 hospitals for environmental excellence.
This recognition reflects the work of dedicated teams at The University of Vermont Medical Center and across UVM Health who are finding innovative ways to improve care while reducing waste and emissions.
One recent example comes from our anesthesiology teams. A new approach to delivering nitrous oxide has significantly reduced waste by transitioning from a centralized pipeline system to self-contained e-cylinders attached directly to anesthesia machines. The change has reduced nitrous oxide purchases by 88%, lowered emissions equivalent to the annual energy use of 65 homes, all while maintaining the same high-quality patient care.
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the operating room. A collaboration between Pharmacy and Respiratory Therapy reexamined metered-dose inhaler use and packaging, reducing emissions by approximately 10 metric tons while maintaining patient safety and outcomes. Waste reduction, recycling, composting, environmentally preferred purchasing, green building initiatives, and clinical sustainability projects continue to make a measurable impact across our health system.
UVM Health's commitment to sustainability is further strengthened through participation in the Health Care Climate Council, a national coalition of leading health systems committed to reducing healthcare's carbon footprint, building climate resilience, and advancing policies that promote healthier communities. Alongside some of the country's most respected healthcare organizations, The University of Vermont Medical Center is helping shape the future of climate-smart healthcare.
